As the referred candidates have an automaed stage to go into the referral stage, it would be beneficial to have the same thing for internals. This would streamline them into their own stage and make it easier for the Talent team. It also avoids sending internal applicants any automated emails intended for externals.

Agree, that would be very useful!
We had the same issue and we walked around it by creating an additional 'Internal Applications' stage in our pipelines. In the application form we now ask the question 'Are you currently employed at [name of our company]? If they answer Yes they are automatically moved the to 'Internal Applications' stage which also has a separate automated email set up dedicated for internal applicants.
